Homeowners and Individuals
We work with homeowners and individuals on ecological surveys to explain the process, identify ecological constraints and provide reporting to support your project. With clear advice and guidance at every stage, our friendly team will help you move forward.
Working with homeowners
Home extensions, loft conversions or other property renovations can sometimes mean considering ecological requirements as part of the planning process. Your architect or local planning authority should be able to advise you on this, particularly if you’re developing near protected sites or habitats such as woodland, ponds, or derelict farm buildings.
If you’ve been asked to provide an ecological survey, or just want to understand what might be needed, our experienced ecologists are here to help. We’ll guide you through the process to explain exactly what’s required, answer any questions and recommend the most appropriate surveys based on your site and proposals.
How it works
Many ecological surveys are constrained by season, so it’s important to engage a suitably experienced ecologist in good time ahead of your planned works.
01
Understanding your project
We’ll start by discussing your plans and reviewing any information you already have, such as architectural drawings or planning advice. This helps us understand your project and confirm whether ecological surveys are likely to be required.
02
Ecological surveys and assessments
Most residential surveys begin with a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), or a Phase 1 survey, to review existing ecological records and determine the need for further protected species surveys. From here, Phase 2 surveys, such as bat surveys, great crested newt surveys or bird surveys, will be carried out.
03
Planning application support
Once surveys are complete, you’ll receive a planning-ready report that’s ready for submission, and we’ll explain any next steps.
