A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) is used to record habitats on site and to determine if any protected species could potentially be present on site, with the view to recommending further surveys, where necessary.

A PEA is necessary to inform a planning application, so that any proposed development can continue lawfully without potentially having a detrimental impact on wildlife.  Further surveys should be conducted before planning permission has been fully granted.

A PEA is a two-stage process: a desk study and a field survey.  The ecologist will conduct a desk study in the office to record protected sites, habitats and species within 1 km of the site.  The ecologist will then conduct a field survey, which involves visiting the site and recording habitats and species, as well as assessing the potential for protected species to be present.

A PEA can be undertaken at any time of year, although April to September is optimal. 

​

PEAs are often conducted in conjunction with a Preliminary Roost Assessment (PRA), if buildings are on site.
